DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

September 25, 2003

Shaun Micheel

ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND

Q. Pity about bogeying the ninth, your last hole?

SHAUN MICHEEL: Yes, I didn't hit a very good tee shot and I think I must have found the only tree in Scotland! It was a disappointing way to finish because I had played pretty well all day, and especially disappointing as that hole was pretty much downwind. I hated to end that way because I felt I played pretty well all day. It leaves a little bit of a sour taste in the mouth to finish that way on a hole which is really no more than a driver and a pitching wedge.

Q. Overall though?

SHAUN MICHEEL: Overall I was pleased. It was tough to get the ball close to the hole. There were a couple of pretty low scores out there but this only being my fourth round on a links style golf course, it was okay. I'd have probably been happy with even par so I suppose I shouldn't be that disappointed with one over.

Q. Some people will say it takes years to get used to the subtleties of links golf?

SHAUN MICHEEL: Yes, it is hard to swallow though, I am not used to shooting over par. But I will go and have a nice dinner, try not to think about it too much and then go out and have a really good round at St. Andrews tomorrow.

Q. What did you find hardest to adapt your game too.

SHAUN MICHEEL: First of all you are trying to make sure you hit the fairways. I know you can play from off the fairways, but controlling your golf ball into the greens and stuff is harder if you don't. I'm also not used to landing it 20 yards short of the pin and rolling it up. Plus the way the wind was going today, I normally like to try and fly the ball into the green and that was difficult. Also picking the right club was hard - I'm not used to hitting a five iron from 170 yards! So it takes a little bit of getting used to and the greens are big enough that you can get it onto the surface and make pars and I thought today was a good day to make pars for me. I know you see other guys making a lot of birdies but it just wasn't meant to be for me today, to shoot a low number. But that's okay. I certainly played a lot better here today than I did here on Tuesday. So it was a moral victory today for me if nothing else. I putted well enough today but I just couldn't get the ball close enough to the hole. You just cant make a lot of 25 or 30 footers in a round. You just can't do that. Even par, or maybe one under was about as good as I could have done today.
