U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

June 18, 2015

Cody Gribble

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WASHINGTON

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: I think it's considering on TV time and who all's playing, and the best players are playing at the right time for the best prime time for the players. So I don't think any of that. But the course played good. I hit the ball well, I hit a lot of fairways. Just tried to two-putt everything, a lot of pars. Only had one bogey today, so it was a pretty solid round.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: It was good. Obviously a little jittery being back, but a little less than last year, I'd say. But I started off really hot. Had a really good 6-iron in there to tap in. And probably just kind of settled me down a little bit, definitely. And had a good bogey on 7. And hit a great wedge shot in there, skipped a little too long, made a good two-putt. Definitely having a birdie off the first, just kind of settled me into the game.

Q. Why do you think you've played so well after your two U.S. Open starts?
CODY GRIBBLE: I can't answer that. I'm hitting the ball okay. My putting is pretty good right now, my lag putts other than one today was very good. I think I'm a pretty good tee ball player. I think my driver has been pretty solid all year. There's a couple of shots out there I still need to work on. But really just grinding for pars. I don't think I've had, other than a couple of rounds this year, I've had a couple of low ones, but I know birdies are harder to come by out here, and pars are all you really need. That's what I'm shooting for.

Q. Do you relish that challenge of grinding it out, have you always been that kind of player?
CODY GRIBBLE: Definitely. Definitely. Coming from Texas, you play in a lot of wind and a lot of different conditions. You're kind of used to very tough conditions. I guess it suits me a little bit, yeah.

Q. (Inaudible) got emotional on the 10th tee before he hit. He was almost in tears. Does that surprise you?
CODY GRIBBLE: You know, before he hit his first tee shot today? He's such a great kid, great family. He's a Longhorn commit, too, which I love. But he's just a super, super nice guy and he's got such a bright future ahead of him. It's not surprising, no.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: Of course, I mean I think the U.S. Open last year is really what has propelled me to this year, what I've done this year, getting into second stage of Q-School and making it on the Web.com Tour. It's given me all the confidence that I need and know that I can compete out here.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: It's playing tough. I really hit the ball well. There's a couple of makeup shots that I had that were spectacular out of the bunkers, and that really helped me a lot to keep it going and keep the par train going. But putting good. There's a few putts that still didn't go down today. There was a couple of things I need to work on. But other than that I'm obviously very pleased with the way I played.

Q. Did you see a 6-under out there?
CODY GRIBBLE: No, no, I didn't. Kind of going out today, I knew it was going to be a grind. It wasn't a number that I had in mind. I know obviously around pars are going to be great. So if you get the putter rolling well and you're hitting every single fairway and every single green, possibly, but it's going to be a perfect round.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: Yes, well, I missed my tee shot left in the rough and basically you had to hit that fairway on No. 7 to get that ball or at least have control on that elevated green. So as soon as I missed the fairway all I needed to do was hack it out, and I hacked it out to a good wedge and hit a really solid wedge and it just kind of skipped a little long and went kind of the back left and I had to put over a mound and nearly made it. Once I missed the fairway basically it turned from a par-4 to a par 5.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: Not great. I've had some good starts. I've had one top 10, a couple of top 15s, one top 25. Steady. Nothing spectacular. Honestly, I really need -- I'd like to have a breakthrough, like a top five here in the second half of the year. But everything is doing fine. Playing steady. I just need a couple more lower rounds, I'd say, on Saturday and Sunday.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: You know, I'd say my wedges, but honestly I'm gaining a lot of confidence, I hate to say a weakness, because I think that becomes mental. But my wedges, I think, have kind of held me back a little bit and they're getting a lot better. If I can continue with my good iron play and good tee ball, I think that will help a lot.

Q. (Inaudible.)
CODY GRIBBLE: Jordan Spieth? All the time. All the time. His wedge play and his putter is I mean second to none. I love going out there with good putters.
