LPGA TMRW Sports Announcement
THE MODERATOR: We want to welcome Michelle Wie West to the media center here at SoFi Center. Congratulations on being the latest member of WTGL. Just some opening comments about your excitement to be a part of this new team golf league.
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Yeah, obviously as an investor of LAGC, been a fan of TGL since day one. Got to come in person last year and really bask in the energy, and it's been really fun to see the moments on social media.
I just think that simulator golf and what the TGL has done with innovation and creativity, what it's done to grow the game, that's obviously been a big part of my post-retirement career, really trying to do that.
Big fan of TGL, big fan of WTGL, excited for what's to come, and excited to be part of it.
Q. What do you love about team golf? You've been a part of different teams through the years. What do you love about playing with teammates?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Yeah, obviously golf is an individual sport. Had the honor to play on Solheim Cups, Curtis Cup, and it's just such an amazing environment to be a part of. I think we just spend our whole lives being solo athletes, and anytime we have a chance to be a part of a team, it's extremely special.
Q. This is the eight-year anniversary of your last LPGA Tour victory, HSBC Women's. How excited are you to get back into the fray with Jeeno Thitikul and Rose Zhang and all the rest of the players? What's the preparation going to be like, and how excited are you?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Yeah, I'm extremely excited. The state of the LPGA since obviously I retired and obviously since I won HSBC, it's been amazing to see the trajectory of the LPGA Tour, and with the inclusion of WTGL, I just see it going up and up and up, so I'm extremely excited to be back on the field with the young ones. My goal is to be better than Kevin Kisner.
But it's just going to be fun. It's going to be fun to be out there with the young ones and learn from them and be a part of the Tour again.
Q. You're one of the few ladies to experience playing golf with the guys. Would you like to see some sort of WTGL-TGL matches in the future?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Absolutely. Being an investor of LAGC, that's been in the conversation since day one. That was very important to me, to Neal, to Alexis, to Serena, and that's part of the plans, coed matches, and I'm extremely excited for that.
Q. What do you think the biggest challenge and adjustment will be?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Hitting into a screen. The screen is massive. I think it's much bigger in person than it is that you see on TV. It is real grass. The lack of walking is going to be quite nice. The fact that you can hit the shot and the green is 15 feet away, that's going to be quite awesome.
But yeah, I think just honestly, I haven't touched a club much in the last three years, so it's definitely going to be an adjustment no matter what, real golf versus simulator golf, so I'm extremely excited.
Q. As you embark on this new venture, what would success look like to you?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: I think success for me is really to use WTGL as a platform to keep growing the game. I want to see more young girls play the game, and hopefully when they turn the TV on and it's not just men playing TGL, it's women, I think that does so much to grow the game.
I want to see more young girls out there playing, and hopefully this will help do that.
Q. How do you see WTGL internationally growing the game for girls?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: I think it's great. I think the LPGA has such a great global reach. We have so much international superpower on our tour that I think naturally having those global superstars playing WTGL is going to be such an amazing international reach, and I'm excited for TGL and this type of golf.
It's already very popular that you see in Asia, and I think it's going to do very well in other parts of the world, as well.
Q. So you see this TGL growing worldwide?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: Totally. Yeah, why not?
Q. Looking at the women who have already committed to playing, are there any personalities that you're most excited for the world to get to know more on this stage?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: All the names. I just think that all the LPGA players have -- they're so fun, and they're funny and they have great personalities. This is what we talk about a lot. You know it.
I just feel like their stories, their personalities just need a chance to be seen and be heard. I think all of them are just so fun, and I'm excited to see everyone get mic'd up. I'll just try not to get fined. (Laughter.)
Q. I was talking to Charley Hull a couple weeks ago. She said her and Lottie Woad have that English banter going. I know you have a great relationship with Rose. What's that looking like? Are you working on the mic'd up moments, the trash talk?
MICHELLE WIE WEST: I have never been mic'd up in my career, and that is for a very good reason. So I'm sorry in advance. It's definitely nerve-racking getting mic'd up because the juices get going. But the banter is great.
When Charley gets going, it's super fun. I understand a third of it sometimes because their English banter, they really get into it. But it's so much fun. I think having the opportunity to get mic'd up and seeing the other players get mic'd up, it's going to be really fun to see everyone's personalities shine through.
I think everyone is going to be really entertained. That's what golf is, right? Professional golf is an entertainment product, and I think TGL does a really great job of using innovation to amplify those moments. So I'm extremely excited to see not only myself but the other girls get that moment, as well.
Q. Kevin Kisner on the course and Shane Lowry on --
MICHELLE WIE WEST: I love Kevin. I don't want to say anything bad. I'm just trying to set my goals.
