Pit Lane Interview
Q. You wind up third today. But with pressure really building on this team sitting 27th in points coming into Michigan, how critical was it to get a terrific run like this?
TY GIBBS: It was. We had a very fast Monster Energy Toyota Camry. I appreciate seeing Dave, Tom this weekend. Wish we could have got one. That was not the option with the fuel spot from where we were in. Just very unfortunate.
Q. That's a great finish, but obviously you're upset about not being able to chase the win down. How hard is that when you see the two leaders right in front of you?
TY GIBBS: Yeah, it's just unfortunate because I feel like we had the capability to go do it. I feel like we showed we were fast enough to go do it.
It's definitely frustrating, but it's just part of it sometimes.
Q. Was there a thought process for you that you can make this work out?
TY GIBBS: Yeah, I was going to go until we were going to run out of fuel. I didn't run out of fuel yet. That was my plan.
I think a win is more important than third. It's good to have a good finish, for sure. Good to have a good day, a good comeback. We started off just very horrible. Glad we could come back and got better. Thanks for my team for sticking behind me.
Q. Ty, you qualified well, were in the top 10. In the first run you dropped back to 28th or so. You made a lot of adjustments and fought back. What does that do for this team going forward knowing you can work on a car that's a little bit off?
TY GIBBS: Yeah, I think that's just most of them, but most of the time we haven't come back from not starting off great, having problems with cautions coming out during pit road stuff.
I'm very frustrated right now.
Q. Will you go back and check the fuel tank?
TY GIBBS: It doesn't matter, but it does matter that we finished good. I definitely seem upset, 'cause I am. We work hard to come out here and come win. It's definitely frustrating.
Q. I want to talk about how this year has gone for you. I know there have been frustrating moments. Chris Gabehart and Tyler have put a group around you. How much has that veteran leadership, experience, help out?
TY GIBBS: Yeah, it's been good, good to have them around me. We're improving. Excited to see what the future does. I'm glad to have Cheddar here. He's been doing a great job, and so has my crew chief and everybody in my group.
Q. Michigan International Speedway for you has been your best racetrack. You come out here and get another top five. What makes this racetrack so unique and so different for you?
TY GIBBS: Honestly, it's because it's so wide and we can pass. We can't really pass in these things. I think everybody says the same thing every week, as we know. The track opens up so much, you can pass a lot. That's what makes it so racy, for sure.
Q. The schedule gets crazy from here. I want to know how you look at this summer stretch. How do you view the races coming up?
TY GIBBS: Yeah, we're going to Mexico next weekend. I'm excited about that one. My grandmother's side of the family is from Mexico, so I consider I have a small percentage of Mexican. Very proud of that.
I'm excited for next week's race. Maybe get to see some family. But very happy for these next stretch the races, some of my sprint car stuff as well. It's going to be a fun stretch of racing.
The more racing the better for me. It's good for sure to be racing. I'd rather be racing than being at home or sitting and looking at data stuff.
I'm excited and very thankful and blessed. I've got great sponsors around me. It's going to be very fun.
Q. When you visit Danielle, Corey and Kyle on the set, you get a beer. I'm not sure you'll take the beer.
TY GIBBS: Awesome. We can all do a couple waterfalls of Monster and have a fine time.
