UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO FOOTBALL MEDIA CONFERENCE

October 22, 2022

Corey Mayfield

San Antonio, Texas, USA

Press Conference

UTSA 31, North Texas 27.

Q. Corey, what was the mood in the locker room like after the big win?

COREY MAYFIELD: Man, it's a big win for us. We was very excited. Man, it just feels good. It just feels good getting this win, man. It really does. It was good, good emotions in the locker room.

Q. Your defense played pretty stout today; how would you say the performance overall from the defense was?

COREY MAYFIELD: I mean, we played pretty good, man. We came in the weeks and they stopped the run, and we ended up stopping the run. They had a couple big plays because of our miscommunication on defense, but as a whole, I felt like we stayed together and we finished the game strong. I think we played pretty solid today.

Q. Is it just a matter of committing the numbers near the line of scrimmage, or what do you have to do differently to shut down the run game as well as you did defensively?

COREY MAYFIELD: Man, I just think we had a good week of practice and just put that practice into the game.

I mean, all the yards we gave up in the past week, it ain't really what -- Texas, five was a little different, but other than that, it's stuff we've done. We're just not fitting up right. It's something we're doing.

Q. How did you feel about the way you guys in the secondary held up coverage-wise today because it seemed like you were in a lot of one-on-one matchups and held your own.

COREY MAYFIELD: Yeah, man, the coaches really trust us, and I love it.

We did okay, man, but we're still giving up some big plays. There's still some stuff we can still clean up.

But I mean, shoot, I'll pick our four over everybody else's four all day. We played solid but we can still get better.

Q. You individually came up with an interception and broke up a few passes. How did you feel about your game personally?

COREY MAYFIELD: Man, I left one out there, man. But Coach Graham, Coach Loepp, they do a good job putting me in position to just make the play. I appreciate them for that.

Q. Corey, how big was that win for you guys in the grand scheme of things?

COREY MAYFIELD: I mean, in the grand scheme of things it was a big win because they're our second place. They was undefeated in conference play. They're a good team. This was a big win for us. But we've got UAB in two weeks.

Q. You guys have been in a lot of close games the last few years, and your offense almost always comes through. What's your mindset when you see them take the field and they need to go 75 yards in less than two minutes?

COREY MAYFIELD: Man, I trust them. Sometimes I don't even look at it; I just touch my boy Nick Fortune and play for the best. But I know Frank, man; he's going to make something happen. He's going to pull it out. He's a dog. He's got dogs to throw it to, and he's got dogs blocking for him.

As long as we stay together, man, regardless win or loss, as long as we represent and we're trying, we're really not tripping too hard.
